Callum Pointon continues to prove consistency is key after extending his title advantage to 91 points following another strong weekend at Rockingham Motor Speedway (26 / 27 August 2017). Meanwhile Jac Constable now leads the Am class by 73 points.
In qualifying, Declan Jones took his first pole position of the season after setting a blistering opening gambit which the rest of the field failed to match. Closest was Green who lined up alongside as Mitchell, Pointon and Ladell rounded out the top five. It was an Am class pole position for Jac Constable. He just held off Kirby and Minshaw for the top spot.
In race one, a slow start for Jones saw him drop well down the order as the lights went out. After being nudged onto the grass trying to pass Boardley at Turn One, and then following a coming together with Perez at Tarzan, the pole sitter was forced to retire to the pit lane after the opening lap.
Green, having started second, inherited the lead. Pointon, Ladell, Mitchell and Gamble rounded out the top five, but Gamble passed Mitchell and then Ladell for second. A storming drive from the Amigos-backed racer who had started 11th (last in the Pro class) saw him pick up six spaces on the opening lap.
An unrepresentative qualifying meant that Colin White spent the opening race making his way through the Am class field. Jac Constable led from lights to flag, although his Xentek Motorsport teammate Jack Minshaw did keep him honest. White, after his recovery drive, finished third in class but after the flag judicials changed the result. Hibbert had retired into the pit lane at the end of the green flag lap seeing the space ahead, Perez, Baker and Constable subsequently started out of position and ended up with a 10 second penalty, thus handing the class win to Minshaw, with White second and Constable third.
Race two took place on Sunday morning. After an action-packed opening lap, Green led from Pointon and Mitchell. Boardley made a storming start to climb to sixth (picking up five spots) just behind Gamble and Hibbert. Two brief safety car periods interrupted the action, but as the racing got back underway, leaders Green and Pointon began to stretch their legs.
The leading duo pulled a gap over the fight for third between Mitchell – who was in a race of his own – and Hibbert, Gamble, Boardley and Jones who were locked in the fight for fourth. The foursome had a fierce scrap for position until Jones leapt to the head of the pack and started to chase down Mitchell.
Jones caught Mitchell in a matter of laps and the pair was soon embroiled in a great race for the final rostrum spot. Mitchell eventually came out on top, but fourth was good enough for Jones to earn the reverse grid pole position for race three.
As the race drew to a close, Pointon threw everything he had at his closest championship rival Green, but he couldn’t make a move stick and the Century Motorsport driver brought his car home to take his second win of the weekend.
The Am class packed plenty of excitement. White was the early class leader from Miinshaw and Kirbly after a spin for Constable dropped him to last in class. A move on Minshaw from White saw the latter into the gravel and out of the race.
Constable picked his way back through the field to retake the lead, whist behind, his Xentek Motorsport teammates Taylor and Minshaw fought for second, but ultimately finished in that order, with Taylor picking up his second podium of the season.
In the final race, Jones made the most of his second pole position start and held his lead into the hairpin for the first time. Mitchell kept his nose in front for second and Boardley picked off Green and Pointon to take third by the end of the first lap.
The leading trio stayed in that order – untroubled – for the remainder of the race, leaving the action to unfold behind. There soon emerged a seven car train for fourth overall. Gamble found himself at the head of the train as he passed both Pointon and Green in as many laps.
Baker was in the midst of the pack too, having stepped up from the Am to Pro class this weekend. He passed both Hibbert and Somerfield to move into seventh, before starting to chase down Green ahead as Ladell got into the mix too.
A spin for Baker during a move on Green sent him down the order, whilst a separate incident for Somerfield dropped him out of the action. Hibbert and Ladell then joined forces to pass a struggling Green who ended up in eventual 10th.
In the Am class, it was Robinson who led from Constable and Minshaw during the early stages. White crept up into the podium spots, until a tangle with Kirby left him without a rear wing and off the pace, whilst the latter retired from the action. Consequently, Constable was handed another win after making his move on Robinson, who had to settle for second in class, just ahead of Minshaw, who had to defend from Taylor all the way to the line.
